subtract the subnet mask from 255.255.255.255, then subtract 1 more
for your example, 255.255.255.255 minus 255.255.255.248 equals 7.  subtract
one more and you get 6 hosts.

for a larger subnet, like 255.255.252.0, you'd get 3.255, which is 3*256+255
which is 1023.  subtract one more and you get 1022

I guess you could use 255.255.255.254 as the base, too...
