Subject: Console ports and limitations of serial ports.... [7:17809]

1. manual RS-232 switchbox
2. terminal server, which is a device with multiple asynchronous ports that
you can cable into console ports and reverse-telnet into (look up 'reverse
telnet' on www.cisco.com). cisco terminal servers are the 2509, 2510, 2511,
and 2512 (and the CS-500, lest I forget the olden products). You can then
put the terminal server on the same Ethernet as your PC, telnet into the
terminal server multiple times, and open one reverse telnet session per
terminal server login. With basic IOS, you can run as many as 5
simultaneous telnet sessions to the terminal server, giving you 5 console
sessions at the same time.

In a production environment, I do indeed telnet to those routers and
switches, and sometimes will have 8 telnet sessions running simultaneously,
Alt-Tabbing between them as I issue commands.
