To answer your questions:
Yes, that's a fair representation.
I figured out that it was the hub because a hub more or less in this picture
works as a crossed cat5 cable, especially if you only have two devices
connected to it, which I tried before I replaced it with a switch.
Since the switch worked and a crossed cat5 worked, but the hub didn't work -
I was very sure that it was the problem.
I did all the show ... cmd's and tried to clear the arp cache without any
change.

why and how did you isolate the problem being the hub? It doesn't sound
like you had a Sniffer out there. Did you run any debugs on the 1720 to see
what it was seing? Any 'show int fast0/0' on the 1720? A 'show arp' on the
1720? Does that model 3Com hub do 'micro-segmentation'?
And Ethernet hubs do not have feelings. However, if they did, they would be
feelin' groovy.
