But of course this problem extends far beyond the cert world. For example,
it is well understood that there is tremendous fraud with academic
credentials - people claiming to have college degrees that they don't have.
For example, the young Hong Kong tycoon, Richard Li, for years claimed to
have a degree from Stanford, and only recently did he admit that he only
attended Stanford, but never graduated. There is also quite a bit of fraud
with academic test-taking itself - every few years, another scheme is
uncovered where people conspired to cheat on the SAT, or the MCAT, or
whatever. A recent poll of high school students today revealed that 70% of
them believe cheating is 'no big deal'.

In light of this, not only am I not surprised that cheating has hit the
Cisco cert world, I am actually surprised that it didn't happen sooner. For
example, consider the CCIE. Would it really be so hard to hire somebody
(i.e. a recently-passed CCIE) to walk into the lab, claim that they are you,
and then pass the lab, thereby conferring CCIE status on you? Anybody's who
been in the lab has seen the security checks, and it's a joke. They just
ask for a picture ID, but honestly, how hard is it to get a fake ID?
