On the clock question, the smaller routers do not have a battery to keep the clock settings during a reboot. You could add ntp to your configuration so the clock is set automagically when the router's links come back up. Not sure what you are asking on the second question but why wouldn't you force the speed of the link to the speed of the hub or switch port you are connected to?
