If you haven't already gotten an answer, this is my take on it: The 2501 doesn't have an image that supports PPPoE, so you can't hook your DSL directly into it, and do NAT overload for all devices, including the router to access the internet. This being said, if you want to connect to your 2501, you will need to use something that puts you on the desktop of your PC, and then telnet from your PC to router. Router won't be able to talk to internet, unless you implement some sort of Internet Connection sharing on the desktop (and the ICS native to Win98 doesn't work for $h!t in my experience, so who knows how it works on Win2K Pro).
Trying to use a Linksys or Netgear DSL router will be trial and error, with a failure rate most imminent. Reason being is that you would still need to use PAT (since you only have one IP from ISP), and I don't think the Linksys or Netgear can do this. Your biggest issue is you only get one IP usually with PPPoE, and it's lease expires every couple of days. :( If this is not the case for you, you're in luck, Static IP and a PPPoE compliant router like the Cisco 1750 and a WIC-1ENET card will make it possible for you to reach your 2501 from the net without issue. Even PCAnywhere or other Terminal program will only work for a limited time if your IP constantly changes. :( Hope I've given you some useful info. I tried to install a telnet demon on my NT4 , but when I telnet in, I am in command console, I cannot telnet again to cisco router even though I can ping it. will other telnet demon allow me to telnet again? If I still want to stick to NT4 or win2k pro, is it possible to get into the router from internet? My friend suggest me to use PCanywhere, that might be my last resort. Your suggestion is greatly appreciated.
