Micheal, Thanks for the reply. I was looking at using the commands as follows for what Cisco call direct encapsulation , rather than specifying ip addresses as the remote peer destination
GLobal config dlsw local-peer dlsw remote-peer 0 frame-relay interface s0/0 Interface commands frame-relay map llc2 I take it that the would be the dlci of the remote peer's interface ? All the underlying frame stuff works fine as I took this from a working lab and just tried to apply this dlsw type config to it I looked at ' sh fram map ' it shows a llc2 to dlci mapping but the dlsw peer connection never makes it. Hope this makes some sort of sense.
