telco can loop either your CSU or the smartjack remotely by sending
standardized binary patterns to them. Also, if you have a telco technician
who is not very good, you can set your own loopbacks manually by either of
the following methods:

On the router with an internal CSU/DSU:
Router(config)#controller t1 0
Router(config-controller)#loopback local
see: http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/471/hard_loopback.html

(you can also set a "DTE loop" manually on external CSU/DSUs to check if
your V.35 cable going to your router is bad or not.)

or what is called a "hard loop" where you do one of the following at the T1
wall jack:

if it is an RJ48X it will have a spring in the female RJ48 T1 jack so all
you have to do is pull out your patch cable and the TX pair will spring into
a loop with the RX pair.

or if you have crimpers, you can make a hard loop cable from 4 inches of
cat5 & one RJ45 end by connecting the following wires:

1--->4
2--->5

and plug the loop into the T1 wall jack. This is really good for proving to
the LEC that they failed to deliver a good extended dmarc all the way to the
end, etc.

Good luck.
