Wondering if anyone in the group has experience with running Cisco ACS version 2.6 on Winblows platform. A friend of mine asks me about it so I decide to test it out over the weekend. The reason I am running it on windows is because my friend knows nothing about Unix platforms (typical for most Cisco Network Engineers these days). I am running the software on a Dell Server with dual processors (1GHz each) with 1GB of RAM. Here is what I've found so far (by the way, I am strictly following Cisco recommendation by running it on WinNT4.0 Server with Service pack 6a and patches):
1) The software is kinda buggy especially when I try to remote manage it (i.e. http://ip-address:2002). It keeps hanging on me which I find really troubling because none of the changes that I made get completed, 2) Eventhough WinNT is Symtric Multi-Processing (SMP); however, the software is NOT. Therefore, running it on a dual-processor doesn't improve the performance, 3) The remote administration is done via http. This translate to "clear text" for traffic going back and forth between the browser and the server. What is Cisco thinking of? The least they could have done is through SSL. With Cisco Freeware, at least I can SSH into the box and get everyone done via CLI, 4) The software is really sluggish. It takes too long to stop and start. When I am using Cisco Freeware TACACS, it takes about 2 seconds for this to happen, 5) I can't modify the content of the notifying alert mail message or even the subject line itself. Does anyone know how? 6) The software comes with too much java stuffs which could be a security liability, These are my "dirty laundry" list so far. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone; however, since my friend has a steep unix "learning curve", I am tempted to tell him to use this product. Anyone who has similar situation or would like to chime in, please enlightment me. Many thanks.
