Agree with Phil on that, especially with the 4000M - it will still run 12.1 code if you max out the memory, but they're not the cheapest. I have one that's configured with an NP-4T, NP-1E, and NP-1R - it's my 2513 look-alike with 2 extra serials.
My strategy for a home lab is to make as many parts multifunctional and multi-interface as possible - less parts, more function.
