Christain, Not a dumb question at all. I don't have any links on the subject handy at the moment, but here is a quick summary:
Metrics of different routing protocols are apples and oranges. Obviously, a metric from EIGRP would look really, really far away to a RIP process. So administrative distance always prevails first. Only when you have two routes of equal administrative distance can apples be compared to apples and oranges to oranges (metric). This is true of Cisco routers in general, and is not specific to routing protocol or routed protocol being supported.
