I know on the 5500 (and probably the 5000) you can only designate one port as the span port (i.e. you could monitor ports 1-4 but only monitor them on port 5 or 6 or whatever port you choose). I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the 6500 (and probably the 6000s) limit you to 4 span ports (monitor ports) only 2 if they're configured as send/receive span ports (why would you want a send receieve span port?!?!?). I successfully configured a 2900XL to have more than one monitor port (I configured port 1 and port 22 to monitor all traffic on ports 2-21) and it seems to work fine.
