I have a company that will be implementing a system that will be taking up quite a bit of bandwidth across the LAN and eventually the WAN. Since it is somewhat bandwidth intensive, they want to know what the average and peak utilization of the network is and what the peak hours are. I'm have a 5509 core right now with mainly 100mb switches in the closets. Links to the closets are mostly 100mb fiber but I've been implementing 1000mb links. We will have a 6509 within a couple months which will be switching at 256gb so I know I will have the ability to move anything they throw at me. It's not difficult to find what the utilization is on each link but to get a average and peak utilization of the entire LAN seems hard to come up with. As most people have said, it's not an exact science.
