depends on your ip scheme.  if you are using rfc 1918 address space on the
inside of your network than you will need to use nat for traffic to get
routed through the internet.  otherwise, nat is not required.  absolutely
use access-lists to tighten the access controls on the router.  look for a
document titled improving security on cisco routers on cisco's website.
