from some training material I produced:

dig @10.0.0.1 domain.co.uk axfr (performs full zone transfer of domain.co.uk
from 10.0.0.1)
dig domain.co.uk ns (checks the nameserver delegation for domain.co.uk using
default DNS resolver)
nslookup -q=ns domain.co.uk 158.43.128.1 (checks the nameserver delegation
for domain.co.uk using 158.43.128.1)
dig domain.co.uk mx (displays Mail eXchanger records for domain.co.uk using
default DNS resolver)
nslookup -q=mx domain.co.uk (displays Mail eXchanger records for
domain.co.uk using default DNS resolver)
nslookup -q=mx domain.co.uk ns0.bt.net (queries specific resolver ns0.bt.net
for Mail eXchanger records for domain.co.uk)
nslookup 10.0.0.1 (returns reverse dns records associated with this IP if
any exist)
host 10.0.0.1 (returns reverse dns records associated with this IP if any
exist)
dig -x 10.0.0.1 (queries default resolver for reverse nameserver delegation
and reverse records associated with this IP if any exist)

hope this helps,

Neil Moss.
