Yes you are essentially correct. Inter-domain MPLS may or may not require BGP, depending on the exact nature of your network.
Watch out for that MPLS/VPN book. It provides a hugely Cisco-biased view of MPLS, significantly more Cisco-biased than most Ciscopress books. So if you think your network will always be 100% Cisco until the end of time, I guess that's OK. But if you think you might ever want to use gear from other vendors, you may want to consult some other sources.
