Perhaps his length of vacation was extended, and it was beyond his control, not to mention permanent, and without pay. ;-)
Case and point... a colleague of mine put on his "Out of Office" message that he had experienced a change in life through his wife's relocation from Texas (U.S.) to Italy with her employer. Needless to say, he had not plans of returning to the office anytime in the near future.
