Usually there are the jumpers on back of the modem you need to flip. Plus there may be some configs you need to enter into the router. If you search for US Robotics on CCO, you shuold find the paper that tells you how to connect the modem to the con port, which IS the way to go because you can reboot it and still have control of the router, for rommon and such.
