The 3524 is a traditional LAN switch - layer 2, The 3550 (with EMI) is
essentially an access sized switch with the IOS functionality of a 6500
switch. It is multilayer, has enterprise class QOS functionality and is
designed to push "intelligence to the network edge".

The upshoot is sell your 5000 cause it is OLD and wont be in the CCIE lab
exam.

A 3500 XL series switch is to the 3550 what a 10baseT hub was to a catalyst
2924. I have seen them on ebay with the EMI -Enhanced Multilayer Image for
around 2500$
