Clearly, you cannot do DMZ scenarios, or get a real feel for multiple security levels. Also hot standby is not allowed. However, that said, it is completely compatible with the larger units' IOS, allowing you to use the current version and get hands-on feel for how it differs from the conventional IOS (and how it is evolving to minimize those differences, for that matter). It also supports VPN, the standard gui config tool and other goodies. It was enough for me.
Another option might be the FrankenPIX, although I have never personally attempted that.
