you need to get through to a Tier 2 or even a Tier 3 at Bellsouth DSL
operations, and get the straight dope. IIRC, you need DSLAM's that are
Alcatel chipset compatible. I have successfully installed many 827's here in
Pac Bell land, and the Cisco 827 is NOT on the official approved list. Or at
least it wasn't a year ago, which was the last time I checked. Other
engineers have told me that once in a while they run into a DSLAM that is
not Alcatel based, and so the Cisco products do not work on them.

Recognize that if you install a DSL router that is not supported by the
telco, you are on your own. In the case of my customers, this has never been
an issue. This includes a major tech company who is a major customer of my
employer ( not mine ) whose name everyone here on this list would recognize.
