always check with your accountant on this. the rules can change suddenly,
whenever the government needs more money ;->

as a profesional, you may be permitted to deduct the cost of training,
certification, books, and other expenses which enable you to improve your
job related skills. up to a certain ceiling. I believe as much as $2000, but
your accountant should know the current numbers.

IIRC, you may not deduct these costs if you are training for a new job or a
change in careers. again, your accountant should be able to provide the
details.

if you are in business for yourself, i.e. a consultant, there are other tax
advantages. a good accountant should be able to help you take advantage of
the provisions of the tax code.
