I posted a few days ago on a requirement I had for a large-scale
network emulator for voice/data classes. The emulator really needed
to be a small telco switch, able to understand analog and ISDN
dialing and route calls to ISDN channels or analog lines, as well as
possibly doing frame switching. It needs to handle a large number of
lines for a lab simulator, although a small number for a true central
office switch -- probably 16-32 mixed analog and ISDN switched lines,
also with some DACS-like functions for fractional T1.

So far, the Adtran Atlas series seems to be the leading candidate --
I'm working on a configuration that I'll confirm with the vendor on
Monday. Several list members and other members have used the 800,
which has been superceded by the 835.

Do note that there are some special cases where a Cisco IPT device
can talk to a PBX (e.g., Lucent G3) and think it's talking to a CO,
but that's insufficiently general for my purposes.

Chuck's post was interesting in that there are problems even with
smaller emulators.

My next task, again luckily not on an individual budget, is to work
some line impairment capabilities into the emulator, so I can
demonstrate actual problems that WAN QoS has to solve. This will
presumably get into both load generators to overload resources, as
well as possibly precise delay/jitter generators.

I've worked with the latter, but years ago. Some of the manufacturers
involved included Hewlett-Packard and Hekimian Labs.
