You need an "MII-rj45 fast ethernet transceiver", a UTP straight-thru cable
to connect to another router or a UTP cross-over cable to connect to a switch.

>theres no reason to convert it to rj45.

Yes, you need to convert it to rj45 if you got an old I/O-MII which doesnot
have an rj45 interface as the others.

>but usually you'd put an optical interface there.

MII: media independent interface, It makes you can use either copper or
fiber.

>what I'd like someone to answer is what the distinction between a mii and
the older aui?

MII supports FastEthernet , AUI doesnot. AUI supports Ethernet (10Base) only.
