All,

We're about to break 1,000 "CZ Live" articles. Nine more to go!

In the meantime, we are continuing to do nearly 500 recent changes entries
per day, or more, and getting many new people involved--and not just
readers.

Apologies for my relative silence. I was in Germany giving a talk
(http://www.citizendium.org/collab_prof.html) and have had to take a few
days to catch up (which of course never ever happens). Now I'm getting
ready for another talk on Monday in San Diego.

I owe you an account of what's happening next. Here's the brief (!)
version.

I've just posted a call for applications for Chief Area Editors, who
collectively will make up an Editorial Board. I think that having Chief
Area Editors involved will help us move toward more approved articles. The
reason we've made progress in Biology and Health Sciences is that we've got
some excellent informal leadership in those areas. So, I figure, if we get
leadership in other areas, we'll make similar progress.

This is, however, all subject to review. I want to engage the community in
a conversation about governance--discussion I've tried to start, with
limited success--and so it seems that folks will really be interested in the
topic only after they have some actual governance structures to think about.

I've also called for some more Editorial Personnel Administrators, i.e.,
folks who will help us catch up with the embarrassing backlog of editor
applications.

With these things started, I think we're finally ready to move ahead
aggressively with recruitment, as we said in our latest press release. I
will kick this off, for my part at least, after I'm back next week, by
posting to PHILOSOP and PHILOS-L. I will also be asking folks to post to
mailing lists in their areas.

In addition, as much as I can anyway, I will continue to work on policy and
help pages, and participate on the wiki--one of the most important things I
can do, I know.

Finally, today I am going to send out a dozen mails to foundations and
companies that contacted us within the last 3-4 months, reconnecting with
them as they have expected us to, to alert them to our progress and to our
nonprofit status. I fully expect good things to result from that as well.

As to the medium-term plan, basically, in my opinion, there is no reason we
shouldn't open the website to readership as soon as we get the money and/or
in-kind donations for more servers, and we get it all set up. I do think we
need to resolve our licensing issues before then, though; that's something
we're discussing on the Forums, by the way. I'd appreciate genuinely
thoughtful discussion there.
