All,

I've posted the following to the forums

http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,1481.0.html

where I hope you will join me for a discussion. Getting a new skin for CZ,
distinct from Wikipedia's, is a top priority for me this week.

-----------

Let's get reskinned (finally!). I'd like to decide on a new skin by Friday
the 18th. I can extend the deadline if someone has shown he or she needs
more time...but let's get this done, and soon!

Here's a new thread where everyone (not just people subscribed to
Citizendium-Tools) can debate different skins. Many are available
[http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_user_styles here,] but most of
those are pretty lame. There might be some diamonds in the rough. Please
call our attention to them, if so!

[Links in the following paragraph can be viewed at
http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,1481.0.html ] Fredrik
Johannson designed some really excellent skins, article1, cztest2, cz3. The
problem with these is that they are just images/mockups. The hard work of
coding them in CSS hasn't been done. But Derek Harkness did a really
nice-looking skin and it's already coded in CSS...we could start using it
today, if we wanted (I guess).

I am going to drive the decisionmaking process on behalf of the Executive
Committee. But we will rely on the participants of this page to vet
different proposals. If something is unpopular, we won't choose it. If
something is the overwhelming favorite, we'll choose it. As
Editor-in-Chief, I reserve the right to veto proposals. But be sure to
make your views clear, both on which skin so far is best, and what
requirements we should have.

I propose the following requirements:

* It must be neat and uncluttered.

* It has to place the stuff that matters where it can be easily found. If
either users or contributors will often want to be clicking on something,
make sure it's very easily found.

* Consider taking a clue from Fredrik (article1) who has useful content,
perhaps of subpages, in a third column. We could have links to subpages
there, too. That was one of the original inspirations for adopting a new
skin, last summer...then we got deep into the realities of the coding of the
subpage system.

* It should be quite different from the Wikipedia skin. This could be "the
look" of a whole new generation of wikis!

Any other requirements?

We would like to have subpages as part of the skin. If you can figure out
how to do that, then please do. If not, that's OK too. Just make sure that
they do look good with whatever skin you create, bearing in mind that we can
change their color and some design elements, etc.
