All, Well, it has snuck up on some of us, but the time has already arrived for the August Write-a-Thon. The topic of the day is Attractions: "Someplace you always wanted to go/something you always wanted to see. And/or a local attraction--go ahead and plug something wonderful about your city, county or village. AND...you guessed it...The Olympics!!!"
This is an excellent topic because it taps into what we already know or are interested about. What do you want to tell the world about the local weekend getaway? Who knows, perhaps you'll find someone who will help! Maybe I'll write about the Hocking Hills in Ohio--or the Prince William Sound--both local for me at different times in my life. I do plan to spend a few hours, at least, on the wiki tomorrow. I have a special request. I would like to invite EVERYONE and I do mean EVERY CITIZEN to make at least one edit to one particular article. I am going to propose the topic myself this time...and if it works nicely, we can vote on the topic. The topic is sports (or sport, if you prefer): http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Sports The page right now is appallingly short, which is why I picked it, and which in the Olympic season should not be the case. I'm sure most of us have something interesting to contribute to the topic--even me. Though I'm out of shape now, but I ran and skiied in high school and still remember some important things about sports and fitness. I'm sure that's true of most Citizens. I think that if enough of us edit the article and pay attention to it, it will teach or remind us of the tremendous power of collaboration and community--a power that some of us have never been perfectly convinced of, but which I believe to be ultimately at the root of our ongoing success. I think this will also reopen some people's eyes to the fact that we welcome articles on a huge variety of topics. Video games? Television shows? Bands? Yes--those topics are welcome here. I'm an "inclusionist" and always have been. By the way, thanks once again to "mistress of ceremonies" Aleta for getting us started!
