All,

A process has begun, largely independent of me, to draft the Citizendium
Charter. The first step of this process--setting the rules of the Charter
Drafting Committee--has concluded, with the approval of the CZ Executive
Committee. The second and next step is to nominate members of the Drafting
Committee. This has already begun. See:

Let me express my deep gratitude to Joe Quick and the other people who have
taken the initiative and who have been discussing these issues on the CZ
forums, as I have been focused elsewhere.

I would rather not speak so much about myself, but I guess I must clarify a
few things. I intend to be an active member of the process, but I am really
delighted that this process has begun and is being driven without my
involvement. I thought I would have to lead this process myself after
WatchKnow launched, but others wanted to move forward sooner. That is
exactly as things should be, because I think the whole effort to rewrite the
foundational principles of CZ is something that has a good chance to
reconstitute the project without me. In other words, this is the perfect
opportunity for CZ to become a project that is fully independent of me, as
(for small-r republican philosophical reasons I have explained in great
detail in a number of speeches and essays you can find via larrysanger.org)
I think is absolutely necessary. And lest anybody (*cough* Wikipedians
*cough*) think that this means I am "abandoning" CZ or "jumping ship"
(*cough* Financial Times *cough*), let me reiterate, once again, that I
stated my intention early on to step down from CZ within three years, for
the reasons earlier alluded to. This does not mean that I have lost faith
in the project--quite the contrary. But if you will look at my career so
far you'll see that I am a "starter," not a quitter. I have started quite a
few online projects that other people have carried on (or, in some cases,
not). I'm not finished doing that, either, by the way. WatchKnow, probably
a sort of encyclopedia for children, and Textop are next.

By coincidence, it so happens that yesterday was the three year anniversary
of my announcement of the idea for CZ in Berlin...
