Dear All, In all the mails that have been exchanged in this group on “privatization”, no one has either defined what privatization is or elaborated its scope. I have tried several times to bring out the role of governments and that of the private sector. This is [deliberately?] ignored by those who advocate “everything in the private sector”.
Hence, this mail intends to seek the definition of privatization, as understood by this lobby and their views on what should be privatized. This mail also seeks to understand the rationale of these lobbyists for privatization. Let us start with the question what should be “privatized”, in their view. Which of the following, in their opinion, should be in the private sector? 1. All consumer goods and services 2. All food items 3. All Municipal Services 4. All means of transportation 5. All infrastructure facilities – roads bridges, dams, irrigation canals etc 6. All utilities – power, air and sea ports etc 7. All recreational and entertainment facilities 8. Water supply 9. Police 10. Defence 11. Defence production 12. Banking 13. Currency 14. Taxation 15. Justice system 16. Prisons 17. Education 18. Health 19. Housing 20. Communication facilities 21. Postal Services 22. All capital goods 23. Border security 24. Preserving and Protecting Ecology, environment etc Generally, justification for privatization is as follows. 1. Private sector is more efficient 2. It is less corrupt 3. Competition leads to provision of better goods and services to the consumer What statistics or data are available to justify these beliefs? If any such data is available, would they please provide the same? Or are their above justifications based merely on feelings, “personal experience”, etc?
