BANGALORE: On Monday the government filed interlocutory application in the High Court seeking extension of time to conduct elections to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in November 2009. As per earlier directions of the High Court, the government was asked to conduct elections to BBMP before March 10, 2009. However, no steps have been taken as yet to conduct elections. Now again the government has sought eight months time to conduct elections to BBMP. In its IA the government has stated that after formation of BBMP, eight City Municipal Corporations have been incorporated into BBMP and another 50 wards have been added to BBMP. The delimitation of wards and ward wise reservation was in progress. “Moreover, the existing Municipal Corporation Act is not sufficient to monitor t h e administration of BBMP. Thus, BBMP needs a separate act, for this committee had been constituted under the chairmanship of former Chief Secretary A Ravindra. So government needs time to formulate new act,” the government said in the IA. Like in other major cities, the government is mulling over bringing a new legislation regarding Mayor’s election. The BBMP Mayor should be directly elected by the public, the government said in the IA. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Citizens' Action Forum" group.
