The first area of support is strategic activities related to standards, practices, conventions and architectural frameworks for database platforms, database tools and overall company database macro metadata repository. The second area of support is application development activities with analysis, estimating, design/modeling, metadata and implementation activities. The third area of support is operational activities with database recovery, tuning, monitoring, platform maintenance/upgrades, and client connectivity. All activities require communication, planning and technical competencies. Performance tuning, security, data modeling, monitoring I am considered an Application DBA. Generally an application DBA focuses on database design, support and administration of databases for an application or applications. An Infrastructure DBA focuses on the system level of database administration. Key Skills for an application DBA 1. Ability to interact with System Analysts and Software Developers to transform business requirements and application requirements into appropriate data model solutions 2. Create and maintain database models and scripts that create, modify, or delete database objects. 3. Assist Software Developers on writing stored procedures and triggers 4. Database conversions and migrations 5. Create and maintain security/permissions for database access 6. Performs database and application performance tuning along with Software Developers 7. Creates, maintains and implements database development standards with best practices 8. Coordinates and works with vendors on packaged software in regards to changes affecting databases Key Skills for an Infrastructure DBA 1. Installation, configuration, upgrade, and migration of databases 2. Backup and Recovery of databases 3. Database security to ensure safety of data 4. Storage and capacity planning that help management make long-term capacity plans 5.
