Monitoring Critical Systems

• Determine availability needs of various existing and soon to be
implemented systems and impacts on non-availability.

• With consideration of software and mechanisms already in use (SCOM
[Systems Center Operations Manager] and SNMP [Simple Network Management
Protocol]), determine additional packages and/or configuration needed to
appropriately monitor critical application and middleware systems.

• Determine methods of alert distribution as informed by impact analysis
and cost effective mechanisms already available.

Impacts

• Inability to monitor soon to be implemented systems (CORE, JBOSS),
leading to increased downtime, reactive versus proactive approaches,
decreased customer satisfaction.

• Inability to engage with OIT in performance tuning. Monitoring is a
required first step.

• Lack of the ability to plan for capacity increases due to lack of
awareness of performance issues or problems arising from day-to-day use of
software and middleware packages.

• Caught off guard by issues that may be detected utilizing the appropriate
tools.

*Thank you, and have a great day.*
