Just joined this list and wanted to say hi to everybody here - and thanks to Doc Rossi for posting invitations at the frettedfriends and cittern Yahoo groups and to Wayne Cripps for running this list.
I'm Frank Nordberg and many of you may know me from other lists as that Norwegian who never knows when to shut up. I used to be a lutenist, but switched back to the guitar because I couldn't get any lute gigs. I still have a vihuela, a couple of lutes and a renaissance cittern I occasionally play. Recently I've been taking the arly instruments more seriously again. We just got another lute player in town and the two of us have been talking about doing a concert together. My cittern is just one of those Early Music Shop kits that I made a clumsy attempt to put together at some time during the late 1980s. Fortunately I had a friend who knew a lot more about luthiery than me and he helped fixing my mistakes and even do some rather nice improvements to EMS' design. In the end it turned out as a reasonably decent instruments, concerning the less than ideal circumstances. The strings are a problem though. It's still got the ones EMS supplied with the kit - rather poor to start with, and obviously the years haven't improved them. Does anybody have any suggestions what strings to use for a 451 mm scale renaissance cittern and where to buy them?
