Are diatonic citterns limited in the choice of key, and if so, which key(s) 
do they support?

I suppose I should introduce myself, being new to this list:
I've been playing double-course wire strings (mandolin!) since childhood.
Citterns have somehow always fascinated me, but the nearest I've got to them 
so far is a Thueringer Waldzither and a mandolin and a mandriola built on the 
same lines.
I live in Germany and play and sing folk music (mainly Irish). 
Another instrument of mine is the 5-string banjo, so it was interesting to 
see the cittern described as a "sort of Renaissance banjo". Makes me wonder 
whather I should venture into the cittern, too!
