Well, since we're talking about strings, I'd be interested in knowing what gauges players of the 18th-c cittern on the list use, and what pitch you tune to.
The string length on my Preston is @43cm (not sure because it is being restored at the moment). I'm currently using A = 415 but am edging toward 390. At 415 I was using g' .22mm iron (sometimes .025, which was easier to play without extraneous noises) e' .27mm iron c' .36mm brass (sometimes .040 ...) g .48mm brass e .022in wound c .032in wound the e' at .27 is not ideal - it really should be more like .30 to match the rest of the set. I hope to find some in Paris at the end of the week. Actually, I'll be away all week, leaving this evening, and don't know whether I'll have internet access (remote part of Normandy).
