I agree with Doc. I've never considered the guitar to be anything other
than a cittern, albeit a strange one!

Actually, there is one more thing about that "anglo-centric" view I
mentioned and that is the name "English" guitar, which I find rather
inappropriate, and which forces us to use other adjectives like Scottish
or
Polish, etc. I can see that this type of classification might be useful
in
a certain way, but it is, in my point of view, based on a fallacy or at
least an incomplete picture, and it would just be easier and perhaps
even
more accurate to talk about things in terms of citterns (and their
music)
of a certain time, place, and maker when known.
