for those interested, on the mandolin cafe site:

http://www.mandolincafe.com/

.. in the "classical, medieval and renaissance"
section of the message board, is the following thread:

.. "quills and plectra, placed in more historical
context."

i appreciate the advice i received about playing
mandolin with a risha but i'm very interested to see
if it can be done - in the sense of crosspicking
quickly and accurately.

i'm under the impression that picking styles for both
instruments have something in common. the brief
cittern archive search i did indicated that
historically, fingers were preferred to picks but
there must have been a sizeable proportion of players
who stuck to it (ladies with delicate fingers, et.
al.). i wonder how fast they got and how well they
played.

i can do a "campanellas" type picking with the risha
simply running over the strings, producing a pretty
peal of notes. pretty it is but speedy, it ain't.
crosspicking requires grit ...
