Thanks for the music link for Renovata Cythara. I hadn't seen the link to that page on the main index. The few pieces there do fit the bill nicely! I haven't played much in the p's and q's lately.
I like the statement on the RQ site that calls the cittern the Renaissance banjo. Both are wire strung (except for the gut strung banjos), the 4-course Italian has a re-entrant tuning based around a g-chord, and seems to play in G all the time. And both get a certain amount of disrespect. There's even a plectrum banjo, to complete the similarity. Has anyone bothered to produce something like a chord chart for 4-course Italian tuning? It could come in handy for proto-continuo, especially if it's more than barred variations of a-a-a-d chord.
