Martina, 

Djilda Abbott and Ephraim Segerman did an article in the 1970's with such
formulae in the Galpin Society Journal (Volume XXVII and the Corrections
section in Volume XVIII).  I've heard that some of Segerman's findings have
been challenged over the years, though.  Perhaps Peter Forrester can catch
us both up to speed on how the article has held up over time.
