OK, so it has been discussed, and it is not by Caravaggio.

Regarding the archives:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/index.html#02267 -
Peter Forrester seems to have initiated a subject line called 'New
Painting', but that email doesn't appear on the archive, or rather it does,
but only in quotations in Andrew's reply. Anybody else missing their
contributions? Replies seem OK. The problem is with new subject headings.

Subject: Re: [CITTERN] New Caravaggio painting of cittern

This has been discussed partially on this list and partially on the
other lists, I think somewhat through the mistake of addresses?

The painting illustrated is not a Caravaggio, but one by Antiveduto
Grammatica. It is annoying for searching purposes that they are
referring to it a "A Lute Player." Goes to show just how much more
work needs to be done to bring the cittern to the public's eye! The
article mentions a separate work, "Apollo the Lute Player" by
Caravaggio, but it is unclear if it is of an actual lute. I guess
we'll have to wait and see what instrument it actually is...

Rob, also see my previous post in response to "new painting"
(hopefully it's in the archive!). I posted a link to a larger image
of the Grammatica painting on Artnet. There is also a link to a brief
description in an article by Joel Dugot.

Best,
Andrew
