Stuart and Rob's messages reminded me that there are some guittars in the
Brighton and Hove museums collection (handy for you, Alexander?). I saw
some of them twenty years ago when they were in Brighton Royal Pavilion
museum. Some details from a catalogue of 1995, when they were all 'in
store':

100573 "Guitar". Preston maker London JR (back of neck), Preston inventor
(screw head), Smith Patent Box, royal coat of arms, London (percussion
attachment).

(100602(?) "cittern". pearshaped, flat backed with fretted neck, peg box
for 7 strings, second sickle-shaped peg box for 3 unstopped strings.
Strings of wire and gut. Middle of 18th c. Hungarian.)

100605 "Guitar". Preston inventor (on tuning plate), Preston maker London
(on reverse of head), Longman Lukey & Co. No 26 Cheapside London (on reverse
of belly).

100606 "cittern". 10 tuning pegs. P. (sic) Rauche in Chandos St. London
1762 (on back).

At that time they were in the charge of the Keeper of Non-Western Art (and
musical instruments) (!).

Best,

Peter
