I tried to get this to work in XeTeX, and as per some examples in the xCJK package, macros did not work. However, after adding \XeTeXinputencoding "bytes" \XeTeXdefaultencoding "bytes" to the preamble, the macros worked! So I can use XeTeX for horizontal purposes now at least, and experiment with font features. I wonder if there is a similar way that such a mode can be selected for LaTeX2e processing?
