Werner, thank you for your reply. I've made progress with SCIM 
character input in emacs and then printing the resuting as a latex 
file.

How to do this with lualatex remains a mystery even after googling and 
reading the lualatex manual. For fonts, guidance is really in the fontspec 
manual. I've struggled with all 120 pages of it and can't even get started. 
As you suggested, I'll turn to the lua-l for help.
