In the early 1970s we had two black labs, one female, one male. It was
summertime and they were in their pen when I let for a few hours. On my
return I found that someone had opened the pen door (had a hasp lock on the
outside) and they were gone. We were frantic, called all of the usual
places, put up posters, etc. When they were found three days later, they
were together, and the female had a swollen foot. The vet thought she had
had her foot stuck somewhere, like between two rocks for a least two days,
he was amazed that the male had stayed with her, but we weren't. After that
we changed the lock to one you needed a key for. When the female died, the
male died within two weeks.
