Hi, Betty Ann;

May I humbly suggest that you consider training your furchild to potty
only in a particular area? It might bea bit tougher if the dog is older, but
I've found that they can be taught at any age. It's not really that tough to
teach them, and very rewarding!
We have an area by the vegie garden and next to the kennel/run (that
stands empty, whyever does anyone need a kennel when they can have
dogs draped all around the house and over their feet?). It's filled with
cedar shavings and about 4' by 9' in size. When Tuxedo was alive I had
a small upright log for him to do his manly business! We let the dogs
out one of the back doors and they race to the potty area to do their
business, coming back when they are done. When I am in the yard with
dogs they still run back to that area of the yard to potty, they don't use
my lawn or flower beds ever. I don't have yellow spots, and I don't have
to hunt for land mines!
To start training dogs to use an area for their potty spot it helps to have
them either on lead, or have the area enclosed. If at all possible get
some of the cedar chips wet with the dog's urine - as in mop up an area
he/she has pottied with a couple handsful of cedar - and spread it onto
the cedar in the potty area. The dogs use their noses to tell them the
choice spots, and that's the best hint you can offer! It's somewhat like
potty training a toddler, I offered praise when a puppy would do her
business in the proper spot! Yes, my neighbors can always tell when
I'm house-training a puppy, lol!
Anyway, I have no experience with any products that help with the
yellow spots, although I have heard a few success stories. I'd really
recommend trying to keep them from pottying on the lawn to start with.
Good luck!
cheers,
Sandra
