Dear Pam, With regard to the misbehaving Cavalier, I would strongly recommend some positive reinforcement for the dog. Not really knowing the entire situation, one thing I would suggest is when on walks bring strong reinforcers- lots of them carried in the left pocket (food, toys) if it desired that the dog walk on the left. Always be prepared for a situation to arise. When a dog or person is coming into view get the dog's attention and give lots of praise and treats continue until distraction is past. What the dog learns is whenever they see another dog, human etc. they get lots of good things from you and that is a lot more fun than having a fit about the other dog etc. I know it seems at first that you are rewarding a bad behavior, but you are teaching the dog that other dogs and people can be a good thing. I have had more success using lots of positive and ignoring negative. Often using something like a spray bottle, hose etc. will only teach the dog to fear the bottle, hose and not really change the behavior. I personally think using a spray bottle is a bad idea due to the fact that I use mine so much for grooming, and like to use water bottles for my dogs on walks, and hoses at shows for baths! Sure would not want them to be afraid. An example, a friend used a spray bottle to keep her Ridgeback off the counter, then when other behavior problems arose and she crated him, she used the spray bottle to offer him water-poor dog-he was terrified! He was getting punished for laying in his crate! Suggest www.puppyworks .com and check out the videos. Lots of good ones. Ted Turner has some really great training and behavior videos. These people are experts in their fields of animal behavior and have so much to offer. I would also recommend another speaker going through puppyworks-Steve White. I went to a seminar Steve gave several years ago sponsored by our local Schutshund club. How exciting to see all the guys with their Rotweilers, Shepherds and Am Staffs doing clicker training!
