HI Leanna and Roseanne,

I and most of my familly have Malignant Hyperthermia. There are actually a
couple of tests available to humans. The first is a simple blood test and if
a certain enzyme level is higher then 40 you are considered at risk and all
surgery ( dental, etc,) are very carefully monitored ( I was recorded at
130).The second involves a muscle biopsy. Very painful and not really used
that much any more unless a definite result is required either for military
purposes or for high risk jobs in foreign countires.

There is only one type of anesthetic currently used for patients with MH
which includes different filters in the OR and specialised nurses in case of
emergencies. When our temp starts to rise in an OR something has definitely
gone wrong and there really is not a lot of time to get the temperature
down. I have lost many relatives even when the MH was diagnosed.

Even temp extremes can trigger off a reaction. So you will never see me
jump into a cool pool on a hot day.

Imagine if you can a charley horse that starts at your hands and feet and
and continues to creep towards your chest and you will get the idea of what
an MH reaction feels like. Not pretty.

I found it a bit disturbing that people in WI would think this was a
discovery. I will have to remeber to make sure to have my bracelet and tags
on next time I travel thru the midwest!
