I have known about four or five people who have had rough coat pups.
Coincidentally, they all had "seafaring" names close up in their pedigrees.
One breeder told me that she thought the neighbors' terrier must have gotten
to her bitch. It had a rough coat, and curly whiskers. She ended up giving
it to her vet, who had to put it down at about three years of age because of
terrible problems with the feet and nails -- the nails would split and the
skin would just slough off of the foot. It wasn't until a couple years
later that the same bitch had another rough coat pup that she realized what
the problem was and spayed the bitch, and quit linebreeding on that line.

Suzanne Brown had a whole litter of them years ago; she took them to some
university for study and they were eventually euthanized. I don't think she
is on this list but you could contact her at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Someone on the hoflin list had a rough coat pup a few years ago. It wasn't
diagnosed until she posted to the list about the pup's dry eye and funny
coat. This puppy ended up having many immune-system problems and died in
their arms at about the age of 2 or 3. The owner's name was Leanne Foley; I
can probably find her email address if you would like to talk to her. I
think there is one more person on the hoflin list with a rough coat pup, but
I don't recall her name.

I have talked to one long-time breeeder who said that she had a rough coat
pup that lived until it was about 14, so there must be a range of how
serious the problem can be.

The first tip-off appears to be curly whiskers and terrier-like coat,
followed by problems with "dry eye" (corneal ulcerations, etc) and
abnormalities of the feet and nails.

Hope this helps,
Leanne
