The early development of a puppies skeletal system can be greatly influenced in the
larger breeds by the surface on which they are raised. Consequently I go to incredible
lengths to ensure puppies are on a totally non slip surface from birth onwards.
Puppies should have their hindquarters under them when suckling and never struggling
to "get a grip" with their legs splayed out behind.I like puppies to be standing
within a short time of being born and see them quickly up on their feet moving around
the whelping area.I have seen swimmer puppies quickly recover on deep uneven
bedding. At the first sign of any flattening of the chest they should be moved to a non
slip surface. The egg carton profile rubber used in upholstery is ideal as an
undersurface. I would caution those using anything but a non slip bedding, your hip x
ray scores could be interesting in latter life.
