Over the years I have always tried so hard from the beginning to get the
puppy to stand on a table, gait correctly, etc. I have altered that a lot
over just the last year. First I rarely train a young puppy to stand on a
table anymore--a little while grooming but nothing like I used to. I use
the table for attention time until they are about 4 months old, then start
more formal table training. I make the table fun. Fuss over the puppy,
handle the puppy a lot over every inch of it's body, even a bit of play on
the table. I want my show puppies to consider the table as a wonderful
place where they get attention.
The biggest change I am making though is to incorporate clicker training.
There is no other way to get such enthusiastic responses to training or such
focus on me and what is happening. Even the least exhibitionist type of
puppy *turns on* with clicker training and ADHD type puppies learn to focus.
It even works for older dogs who were originally trained differently.
